The
Horse Corral
This walled area once contained
the old convento garden, possibly a well and a
portion of the monks' living quarters. Most of the structures in this area were
demolished to provide stone and brick for foundations and repairs done in the
years following the Alamo's secularization. The presence of a well
in this location during the 1836 siege is speculative.
The Northeast corner was
protected by a cannon on a one foot high ramp firing through an embrasure.
It was from this location close to the church that the second breakout
occurred. The resistance of this group was even greater than the first, forcing
Mexican General Sesma to send reinforcements twice to overcome them.
