Introduction

In March 1979, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR) of The University of Texas at San Antonio entered into a contract with the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) to conduct archaeological investigations in the vicinity of the north wall of the north courtyard at the Alamo (41BX6), a National Register of Historic Places site (Figure 1). The purpose of the investigations was to obtain information on earlier walls and wall footings in the immediate area of the present wall, in preparation for the proposed reconstruction of the north wall. It was also imperative to discover whether the present footings would be substantial enough to support the new wall or whether additional footings would need to be constructed. These investigations were conducted in two stages (Phase I and Phase II) because the DRT modified their original construction plans after the initial north wall excavations (Phase I).
