Example 2. A double edged espada ancha, most likely of the 18th Century, reputedly found in the vicinity of Cuba, New Mexico. This example is uncommon in that the hilt elements are made of solid silver rather than iron, which is what is usually encountered. The leftward (in this view) portion of the knuckle bow guard, which formerly expanded as a single piece to cover the end of the hilt is now missing as is the shell guard langet, whose former point of attachment may be discerned. Overall length: 75 cm. (29.5 inches), blade length: 64.5 cm. (25.4 inches). |
