DeWitt Land Grants | Gonzales Outer Town

At its Jan 25th meeting in 1833, the first elected Gonzales Ayuntamiento decreed in Art. 11 that DeWitt Colony settlers could purchase up to 4 outer town lots, if improvements were made, then 4 more if they were in the same block. All could own 4 outer and 2 inner lots, but no more. The lots were to be paid for by installments. At the Feb 15 meeting the Ayuntamiento set the rules for survey. At the Jul 15 meeting, Art. 20 set the costs for transfer of deeds. In the meeting of Aug 12, the group charged Ezekial Williams and B.D. McClure with appraising the town lots. At the meeting 21 Dec, the group appointed Almeron Dickinson and Green DeWitt to appraise the lots citing the former's failure to appear at the meeting and again set the tax rate on town lots. In Art. 11, the Ayuntamiento of 1834 set a tax of 1 dollar per lot in the inner town and decreed not to tax outer town lots stating that persons could obtain as many as they could improve and pay tax for in future valuations if they kept streets open and put no more than one block in a deed (repealed in part at the same meeting). In Spanish, town lots were referred to as a solar, community lands designated for the pasture of livestock is referred to as dehasa, and exidos as a commons or place of recreation.

(Bk refers to a Block which was divided into 6 lots. $$ refers to appraisal in Mexican pesos. Lots denoted P for premium lots were not appraised, PE=premium lots for the empresario; PM=premium lots for mechanics.
